The Boy Scouts’ motto rings true: “Be prepared.”

Cochrane is encouraging residents to understand the risks in their community this, and every year during Emergency Preparedness Week.

Taking steps towards emergency preparedness can save a life.

This week highlights a chance for individuals to think about, acknowledge risks, and be ready for potential adverse events.

Ongoing preparedness – rather than merely reacting to disasters – is more important in the long run.

Throughout the week, the Town of Cochrane will post valuable emergency readiness advice via social media and other communication platforms.

"While natural disasters may be unavoidable, we can mitigate risks and minimize the impact of emergencies,” says Jay Judin, director of Protective Services and Emergency Management for Cochrane.

Residents are encouraged to “review and improve their personal or family emergency plans this week, taking tangible steps towards readiness.”

Taking a “proactive approach” is key for individuals and their loved ones during crises, he continued.

Residents can take simple steps to be prepared for various emergencies. Here's how:

  • Create a plan: Devoting as little as 20 minutes to crafting an emergency plan can significantly enhance readiness.
  • Put together an emergency kit: Equipping yourself with essential supplies to sustain for at least 72 hours during an emergency can be lifesaving.
  • Think about what you need most – water, food, and items such as phone chargers and blankets.

This year’s theme is “Be prepared. Know your risks.”

Emergency Preparedness Week allows for a great opportunity for citizens to take preventive measures to protect themselves, their family and friends, and their community during crises.
